Captain's Vinyl has been around for a year!

Bryan "The Captain" Kavanaugh was once a Record Raid dealer (and still is), then started Captain's Vinyl in the foyer of his apartment, and recently moved to a new storefront over at 637 S Pierce St in Mid-City.

To celebrate a year of sellin' records professionally, this Saturday August 2nd, they're having a sale:

Buy 2 records (over $25) and pick out a third at the price of the cheaper of the two albums.

If you haven't stopped by, I reckon Saturday's the day, any time between Noon and 6PM. Go meet the Cap'n! Here's his facebook page

Algier Point gets a new record store: Juan Le Ger Records

It's been an exciting couple of months for New Orleans record stores, with Euclid and Louisiana Music Factory moving to new, nicer spots and Captain's Vinyl getting a real storefront. Now the westbank is getting a Record Store.

Juan Le Ger Record Shop opens this Thursday the 17th at 11, just in time for Record Store Day. Located at 240 Pelican Ave in Algiers Point, just two blocks away from the ferry, Record Raid veteran John Houska is stocking the joint with tons of used wax of all styles, though his specialty is 45s. It's a beautiful building with lots of nice light, beautiful aged wood, and Juan Le Ger's art on the walls. While they're still pricing things out, John says it's coming along nicely for Thursday: credit card payment is ready, everything's arranged, looking good.

Record Store Day Guide: April 19th, 2014

Record Store Day swiftly approaches. While many grumble about the hoarding mentality from people that hardly show the other 344 days of the year, the idea is nice. Here's our yearly guide to how New Orleans shops are doing Record Store Day, whether they're having RSD exclusives, sales, bands, etc... all the important info. Keep in mind that stores never really know what they're going to have until it shows up sometime this week, so I can't say much about that.

Note! This is being updated on the fly! Things may change so make sure to check back on April 18th

Captain's Vinyl

637 S. Pierce, 12pm-6pm

Captain's Vinyl won't have RSD exclusives, but if you come in with a RSD bag that you got from shopping elsewhere, they'll give you 15% off! Make sure to check them out at their new location in mid-city!

Domino Sound Record Shack

2557 Bayou Rd, 12pm-6pm

Domino doesn't tend to participate in Record Store Day though they do sometimes pick a few items if they really stand out

Euclid Records NOLA

3301 Chartres St., 11am-7pm

Euclid had a pretty big stock of RSD items last year and the line was extending two houses over when they opened. This year they aim to take it a few steps further, as they're wrapping it into the grand opening of their (excellent) new location. Expect beer, BBQ, and live music all day.

Rules: One of each item per customer, no reservations, first come first serve. Customers may have as many different items as they like.

Facebook event

Jim Russell Rare Records

1837 Magazine St, 11am-5pm

Jim Russell will not be stocking Record Store Day items

Juan le Ger Record Shop

240 Pelican Ave, 11am-6pm

Huh? What's this? It's a new record store opening in Algiers Point, 2 blocks away from the ferry. Grand opening is April 17th through 19th. All used vinyl, so no RSD but this is definitely exciting news! We've got a preview of it here

Louisiana Music Factory

421 Frenchmen St, 11am-5pm

Louisiana Music Factory will have RSD items as well as live entertainment. They just recently moved to Frenchmen St. so their status as the most overlooked RSD location may not be the case for too much longer! They'll also have musical performances in the afternoon.

Rules: No reserves, one of each item per person. No other restrictions.

The Mushroom

1307 Broadway, 10am-Midnight

The uptown option. The Mushroom is not only getting RSD merchandise, but the next day (4/20) is a favorite of theirs, supposedly their birthday (though perhaps there's another motivation...), so everything in the store is 44% off Friday through Sunday. There's also a few bands later at night with pizza and beer, but I couldn't get the details about it.

Rules: "yeah, probably one item per customer"

Peaches Records

408 N. Peters Street, 9am-8pm

Peaches will be a zoo. Literally. They told me they will have an exotic petting zoo starting at 9AM. . Peaches tends to be one of the first to open and gets a good amount of RSD exclusives. They'll also have a keg and some giveaways.

Rules: No reserves.

Skully'z Recordz

907 Bourbon Street, 9am-8pm

Skully'z always packs in as many RSD items as they can fit. They've tended to open a little bit in advance of 9 so if you want first crack at it make sure to get in line a little early.

Rules: No reserves, One of any item per person, no limit on how many different items you can purchase.

Outside New Orleans...

Atomic Pop Shop

2963 Government Street, Baton Rouge, 9am-4pm

Pop shop will have plenty of RSD exclusives and live bands!

Rules: None Yet

Facebook event

Lagniappe Records

986 France St, Baton Rouge, 10am

I believe this may be Lagniappe's first RSD but they aren't holding back! They'll have RSD exclusives and at least five different bands performing, as well as free beer, grilling, and a raffle to score even more cool stuff!

Rules: None Yet

Facebook event

Mobile Records

140 b S. Sage Ave, Mobile, Alabama, 8am

We're getting real outta town now, but our friend Keith is throwing a helluva party, opening at 8am and with live bands starting at noon.

Rules: none yet

Facebook Event

Central Square Records

89 Central Square, Seaside, FL, 8am

At this distance out from New Orleans I'm mostly only listing for my own benefit, as I'll be right outside Seaside at the time

Rules: none yet

RECORD RAID IS MOVING TO POCKET PARK!

The original site was flooded today (Friday) so we're moving to a different spot on campus.

Thanks for understanding, the important thing is that the show is STILL ON!

Record Store Day Black Friday in New Orleans

The strange phenomenon that is Record Store Day is back this Black Friday with all sorts of exclusive records sent to indie record stores. The official list of releases is here but there's no guarantee which store will have what. You can always try calling but most won't let you reserve one. In the grand tradition of Black Friday, you gotta wait in a big ol' line.

But we can at least let you know who's doing what so you can plan out your day. Unfortunately, I'm out of town so I won't be able to do a big run-down like I did on Record Store Day.
I'm only listing stores that are participating in RSD's Black Friday Sale. If they aren't on this list you can assume they are not participating. To be explicit, that includes Domino and Jim Russell.

Skully'z * 907 Bourbon Street* (504) 592-4666
Skullyz has always been the tiny store that could and have always done great with these. They've been hyping up their Black Friday for a few weeks. The line wasn't huge for Record Store Day despite being one of the first ones opened. They also let people in a little early.
Hours:10am to 8pm Friday
Rules:First come, first served, no reservations. One of each item per customer, no limit on how many RSD items you can buy.

Euclid Records NOLA * 3401 Chartres St * (504) 947-4348
Euclid was HUGE for Record Store Day with the line extending past its pink walls to the next few houses. Don't underestimate how early you might have to get there! They were very well stocked with RSD goodies though
Hours: Opens 11am-7pm
Rules: One of each title per person. I'm assuming that only a few will be let in at a time if the line looks like it did for Record Store Day

Lousiana Music Factory * 210 Decatur St * (504) 586-1094
LMF tends to be the sleeper option for RSD. The line on Record Store Day was only handful of people. The upstairs area tends to get a pretty nice amount of stuff.
Hours: Opens 10am-7pm
Rules: One of each item per person.

Mushroom * 1037 Broadway St * (504) 866-6065
The Uptown option. I came an hour after opening on Record Store Day and most of the big stuff was gone.
Hours: "10, maybe a little earlier"
Rules: "mmmm no, I mean we might not letcha get all of 'em"

Peaches * 408 N. Peters Street * (504) 282-3322
Looks like Peaches will be the earliest open. I went to Peaches about 10 or 15 minutes after opening on Record Store Day and there were still plenty of big items left.
Hours: 9am
Rules: Dialog went something like "no rules, no" "no one per person rule?" "depends on the person!"

Side note: Captain's Vinyl on 2252 Cambronne Street won't have RSD items but will have a sale of 25% off your first purchase.
