Record Raid! Sunday, March 25th 2018

March 25th Record Raid 2018

Record Raid is back! We're partnering with the New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old US Mint. A lot of our vendors have been patiently waiting for the next opportunity to sell... and that means crates overflowing with records. Come browse LPs, 45s, CDs, Tapes, and more from vendors all over the region. And soak in some music history while you're at it!

Where: The New Orleans Jazz Museum, 400 Esplanade Ave

When: Sunday, March 25th 10am-5pm.

Early Bird Entry $5 From 10am-11amFree after 11am.

March 2018 Record Raid

Vendor Registration for March 25th Record Raid 2018 at Old US Mint

Due to issues with the previous venue, we have been forced to look for new locations. However, I'm very excited about this opportunity to do a show at the Old US Mint in conjunction with the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Please read all the details as this show will have some differences from previous shows.

Where: New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old US Mint. 400 Esplanade Avenue, New Orleans, LA

When: Sunday, March 25th 2018. Load-in starts at 9am, event starts at 10am. Load-out goes from 5pm to 6pm.

How Much Does it Cost to Sell? $40 per 8 foot Table if reserved before March 1st. $50 after that. Registration closes March 12th. If this is your first Record Raid, you get 50% off your first table. Limit of 2 tables per vendor. Chairs will be provided for free. You cannot provide your own table.

What you can sell: Music of any format, vintage, used or new. Record labels are free to sell their music as well. Consumer audio equipment is great too. Music-related ephemera (books, movies, memorabilia, t-shirts) are OK so long as they're not the focus of the table. We do make some exceptions, so feel free to ask.

What you can't sell: Food and drink. As above, Crafts are generally discouraged unless they're clearly a "side item", musical instruments are discouraged, though you may leave a paper at your table letting people know (so long as they're not the focus). You should be selling *something*, for instance you cannot set up a table promoting another event.

Venue Load-in: Load-in starts at 8:30 am. Loading into the building should be easy, with ground-floor access to the building via a back courtyard where vendors can pull in. You will have to repark your car after loading in, however (paid) parking options are plentiful in this area of the French Quarter. Vendors can sell in the landing areas of the second and third floor as well as the third floor concert hall. There are two elevators to reach these floors, which will likely slow things down but at least they're very close to the loading area and the selling area. We've included your desired floor on the sign-up form below. Priority will be given in order of sign-up -- we may have to move you to another floor if we think one fills up, and as of yet we don't know the exact floor plan or capactiy of tables on each level. This is our first time at this venue, so please be accommodating as we try to figure things out. As for which table you get on that floor, that will be first-come-first-serve

About the venue: The New Orleans Jazz Museum is located inside the Old US Mint where Esplanade st meets the river, right next to the french market. I'm optimistic about this spot: it's in a touristy area with a lot of foot traffic, should grab shoppers from the French Market and from Louisiana Music Factory across the street. It will also likely get a lot of customers from the Marigny and Bywater areas of New Orleans. For a spot in the French Quarter, it's surprisingly accessible with easy access via both Esplanade Ave and Elysian Fields -- nearly a direct shot from the interstate.

The venue does not have food or drink onsite but is surrounded by good options. The Jazz Museum inside the building is a lot of fun and a draw on its own -- could also placate significant others that might limit the time of customers.

Due to the shifting programming of this venue, this may not be a permanent solution. We have backup ideas, but we'll see how this goes.

About the Record Raid: The Record Raid has been New Orleans' largest record show since 2010, averaging between 300 and 400 customers. We like to keep an informal, fun and funky vibe that can cater to serious collectors but not intimidate casual buyers. Our free entry helps keep a diverse group of shoppers. We want to create a show where people can be excited about records and talk about them rather than simply shop for them. We're coming off of a bit of a break lasting almost a year, so we expect vendors and shoppers to be pretty excited.

Other details

It's generally a REALLY good idea to have a Square or some way to accept credit cards. We'll never force you to accept credit cards, but it's nice for customers. I've heard from several vendors about how carrying a credit card reader has given them a big bump in sales.

We expect to have a table at the front to help people with questions (though the event itself is free). We've been assigning nametags to tables and people. The point is to make sure people know who to talk to when they find records. To be honest, we don't care what your name is exactly, the important thing is that it matches what's written on your table.

I would make sure to bring a handtruck if you have one.

People often ask what they should sell. My answer is always "Play to your strengths". We get a very diverse crowd, and there's often somebody that's into what you have. Our recent poll had a few people complaining that there was too much classic rock and other "beginning record collector" stuff. People are definitely looking for deals, but don't leave the big ticket stuff at home either. Things that I always hear people saying they want to see more of: punk, reggae/ska, 90's-2000's indie rock.

We will probably continue to have early bird admission from 10am to 11am at $5 per head.

We are still figuring things out. We will keep you in the loop!

New Orleans Record Store Day Rundown: 4/22/2017

Record Store Day happens on Saturday April 22nd, which means that record stores around new orleans will have sales, events and will carry limited edition items from the Record Store Day company (henceforth refered to as RSD). There are a few RSD items of particular interest to New Orleanians this year, most notably an Allen Toussaint collection and a Meters box set. You can see the full list of RSD items here.

Below is a list of record stores in New Orleans including their open times and whether they'll be carrying RSD items. Even if there aren't any RSD items you're interested or if a store isn't carrying RSD material, a lot of stores have extra reasons for you to come and hang out. New Orleans is lucky to have as many great stores as we do. If you haven't been to one of these, perhaps Saturday is a day to check them out.

And a reminder: RECORD RAID is coming up on May 13th.

Captain's Vinyl

Address 637 S Pierce st.
Phone (504) 908-9612
Hours 10am-6pm
RSD No

Captain's Vinyl is based in mid-city specializing in used rock. They don't have RSD stock, but they'll be doing a 20% off sale all day on all items that aren't sealed. They'll also have a drawing of tickets for concerts put on by Winters Circle Productions.

Disko Obscura

Address 113b St. Mary Street
Phone (504) 872-0726
Hours 11am - 7pm
RSD No

Disko Obscura carries an expertly curated selection with a focus on electro, disco, funk and soundtracks. No special preparations for Disko Obscura this Record Store Day. Still worth dropping by, especially if you're visiting NOLA Mix as well.

Domino Sound

Address 2557 Bayou Road
Phone (504) 510-9356
Hours Noon - 6pm
RSD No

Domino is an aggressively-priced vinyl-only store with a great selection of world music (especially Caribbean), punk, and soul music. Domino is never particularly interested in the Record Store Day hooplah, though they sometimes do order a few items if they're really interested in them.

Euclid Records NOLA

Address 3301 Chartres St.
Phone (504) 947-4348
Hours 10am - 7pm
RSD Yes
Facebook event

Euclid tends to be the hotspot for Record Store Day with tons of official RSD merch and all sorts of other reasons to hang out. They have a special mission this time: proceeds from Crawifsh, T-shirts and raffles go to help with Guitar Lightnin' Lee's cancer treatments. They'll also have pre-opening mimosas for that gigantic line, and live sets from Gar Gar, The Essence, Pattrick Shuttlesworth, Stoo Odom and the Bongoloids. Maybe I missed something, just check out the facebook event.

Louisiana Music Factory

Address 421 Frenchmen St.
Phone (504) 586-1094
Hours 11am - 8pm
RSD Yes
Facebook

Louisiana Music Factory's biggest strength is local music, but they always have a good crop of used material for reasonable prices as well as some prominent new releases. LMF is stocking official record store day merch. I've always thought they're an underrated location for RSD. They don't order a ton, but not too many are lining up at their door either. They'll have live performances by Carlo Ditta and Guitar Slim Jr., Robin Barnes, The Revealers, and Miss Mojo.

The Mushroom

Address 1037 Brodway st.
Phone (504) 866-6065
Hours 10am - Midnight
RSD Yes
Facebook

Located basically on Tulane's campus, The Mushroom carries a lot of college-friendly vinyl and a pretty robust used CD selection. They carry a lot of Record Store Day items and they blend it into their "birthday" sale on 4/20, which means 42% off "almost everything" and $4.20 off of new CDs and vinyl. A warning: The Mushroom tends to open early on Record Store Day. That's probably a good thing, but I've definitely gotten there at 10am and found that the thing I'd looking for had already been grabbed, so get there a little bit earlier.

NOLA Mix

Address 1522 Magazine St.

Phone (504) 345-2138

Hours 11am - 6pm

RSD Yes
Facebook event

NOLA Mix is a small store with a focus on soul and funk. This is NOLA Mix's Second RSD, they'll have plenty of RSD material, and they intend to party all day. They'll have free drinks and music from DJ Ben Shive, The Deft Funk DJ's, Tony Skratchere, DJ Ruby, DJ Raven & DJ Yamin.

Peaches Records

Address 4318 Magazine St.
Phone(504) 282-3322
Hours 9am - 8pm
RSD Yes
Facebook Page

Peaches usually orders a pretty good amount of RSD stuff and is one of the first ones to open. Keep in mind that they have moved and are now uptown! They'll have drawings to win tickets from Winters Circle Productions.

Sisters in Christ

Address 5206 Magazine St.
Phone (504) 452-5517
Hours Noon-6pm
RSD Yes

Sisters in Christ has a focus on small label punk and indie with a lot of things other stores may not carry. Missed your chance at a hot item at one of the other stores? Sisters in Christ stocks RSD items but opens at noon, later than most, so they could be a good spot if you want to multiple stores. They have a cool tradition of selling an exclusive-to-the-store 7" every Record Store Day, and this year it's from The Body.

Skully'z Recordz

Address 907 Bourbon St.
Phone (504) 592-4666
Hours 9am-8pm (sometimes opens a few minutes early)
RSD Yes
Facebook

Skully'z does a great job of keeping on top of new indie music. They always carry about as much RSD material as they can possibly fit into their tiny store. They also open pretty early, always a nice option for Record Store Day, though there's usually a pretty good line as well. They usually have a few giveaways, but at the moment nothing specific planned.

The White Roach

Address 5704 Magazine St.
Phone (985) 373-1751
Hours 11am-6:30pm
RSD Yes

The White Roach is the newest record store in New Orleans and this will be their first Record Store Day. In addition to carrying RSD stock, they'll have crawfish and live bands. The store has a rock focus with a slight leaning towards garage rock.

How much: $40 per table 8 foot table until April 10th when paid online. $50 if paying day of (with RSVP) or until May 1st. Maximum 2 Tables. If this is your first Record Raid, your first table is 50% off (the difference will be refunded when paid online).

Jazz Market layout

What you can sell: Music of any format, vintage, used or new. Record labels are free to sell their music as well. Consumer audio equipment is great too. Music-related ephemera (books, movies, memorabilia, t-shirts) are OK so long as they're not the focus of the table. We do make some exceptions, so feel free to ask.

You should be selling *something*, for instance you cannot set up a table promoting another event.

About the Record Raid: We usually have about 300 to 400 visitors with pretty diverse tastes. Our shows are casual and a little funky. We try to keep entry free and tables fees low to keep the crowd diverse and not turn any potential customer away. We want it to be a place where music lovers congregate and can talk about records.

About the Peoples Health New Orleans Jazz Market: This venue has been a hit with our long-time vendors as well as new ones and customers. It's a beautiful space and they enjoy working with us. Load-in is super easy with a side entrance to the main hall and no obstructions for a smooth handtruck experience. The graphic to the right isn't entirely accurate and there's still a number of spots we can expand into.

The jazz market has a bar, though it is all-ages. We had food outside for sale from a local pop-up last time that went over really well, so we'll do that again. The bathrooms are nice too.

The one bummer here is that there's no dedicated parking, though there's usually enough nearby on the street. We ask that you please repark your car after unloading to allow others to unload and make things easier for customers.

There are some walls with outlets on them. If you need this, people let me know and I'll try to reserve a table near an outlet for you.

Other details

Table location is first-come first-serve. You may not provide your own table. You may bring other display racks etc as long as they don't get in anybody's way. You may sell items underneath the table. If for any reason you need to cancel, refunds for the tables are available up until May 7th.

It's generally a REALLY good idea to have a Square or some way to accept credit cards. We'll never force you to accept credit cards, but it's nice for customers.

We're going to have an early bird admission session from 10am to 11am for $5 a head. This seemed to go pretty well last time we did it.

We'll have a security guard on site.

Other "attractions"

As usual we will have DJs and a raffle. And a food truck.

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Record Raid Fills Peoples Health New Orleans Jazz Market with Vinyl June 11th

Pop-Up Record Store brings vinyl enthusiasts from all over the gulf region for a day of digging through music.

On Saturday, June 11th the Peoples Health New Orleans Jazz Market will host its third Record Raid from 10am to 5pm. Record Raid is New Orleans' largest record show with over twenty record vendors congregating to sell LPs, 45s, CDs, cassettes and more. Vendors range from record stores to private collectors to people cleaning their attic; some from New Orleans, some of them from the gulf region, some of them traveling collectors from many states away. The music is similarly diverse, with records still shrinkwrapped from being released this year to dusty old records from the 50s, highly-sought rarities to dollar bin steals, and genres ranging from 60's surf rock to dixieland jazz to electronic and beyond.

When the Record Raid started in 2010 as the WTUL Record Fair, creator Hunter King found his vendors in the garage sale vinyl hounds he would see every weekend early in the morning. Some of them, like blues authority Terry Pattison, have set up at every show since. But the word has spread to others, like Alabama's Keith Glass who has since founded Mobile Records. In fact, several local record stores began as Record Raid vendors; Captain's Vinyl, Disko Obscura, Nola Mix, Lafayette's Lagniappe Records, and even Euclid Records all sold at Record Raid before their own brick and mortar.

After years of trying to find an ideal venue, Record Raid has found a good partner in the Peoples Health New Orleans Jazz Market. While record shows across the country are often held in VFW halls and hotel convention rooms, the Jazz Market provides a more vibrant backdrop for music conversation. Record Raid has several ways of combating the competitive, greedy atmosphere that might befall your average collectors' events. Djs spin rare records, food trucks provide a tasty break from the hunt, and raffles add another round of excitement. It makes for a casual, laid-back atmosphere that lets music fans talk about their favorite records with each other.

The event is all-ages with an early-bird admission from 10am to 11am for $5, then free admission from 11am to 5pm. More information at recordraid.com.
